History of the Fox Red Labrador
Just Another shade of yellow….
Origins of Labradors....
Labrador Retrievers, commonly known as Labradors, trace their origins back to the early 19th century in Newfoundland, Canada. Originally, these dogs were known as St. John’s dogs or Lesser Newfoundland dogs. They were bred by local fishermen to help retrieve fish and pull in nets from the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Their natural retrieving ability, strong swimming skills, and hardworking nature made them invaluable companions for the fishermen.
In the early 1800s, these dogs caught the attention of visiting English nobles who brought them back to England. There, they were further refined and developed into the breed we recognize today. The breed was named after the Labrador Sea, although the dogs originated from Newfoundland. The Kennel Club in England officially recognized the Labrador Retriever as a distinct breed in 1903, and the American Kennel Club followed in 1917.
The famous "The Waltons" show in the 70's had a Fox Red Labrador as a cast member!
and the Fox Red Colour
The fox red color is actually one of the original shades of the yellow Labrador. Initially, all Labradors were black, but over time, breeders selectively bred for the yellow color, which ranged from pale cream to dark fox red. The fox red shade is a recessive gene within the yellow Labrador spectrum. Despite its historical presence, the fox red color became less common as the lighter shades of yellow gained popularity. However, dedicated breeders have worked to preserve and promote this beautiful, vibrant color.
Today, fox red Labradors are recognized for their striking appearance, intelligence, and excellent working ability, making them popular both as family pets and in various working roles. Their unique color and rich heritage continue to endear them to Labrador enthusiasts around the world.
